Fireworks, Fairs & Heritage Celebrations
July is a patriotic month at Chippewa Lake. From Independence Day flares circling the shoreline to county‑wide fairs and heritage festivals, there’s no shortage of things to do when you stay at The Bluffs this month.
Independence Day flares & fireworks
Chippewa Lake’s Fourth of July tradition is both simple and spectacular. According to the Mecosta County Visitors Bureau’s event listing, the community lights flares around the lake at dusk, followed by a free fireworks show over the water around 10 p.m. Bring a blanket or lawn chairs down to the resort’s private shoreline to watch the glowing ring of flares encircle the lake and the fireworks reflect off the calm surface.
Mecosta County Free Fair
One of the county’s biggest summer events is the Mecosta County Free Fair, held in Big Rapids from Monday, July 13 through Saturday, July 18, 2026. This staple event features a midway with carnival rides, a livestock auction where local farmers and youth showcase animals, and agricultural exhibits that introduce families to farming and livestock. Grandstand shows, food vendors and games round out the fair’s attractions. It’s a quintessential Midwest fair that will delight kids and adults alike.
Remus Heritage Days
A short drive west of Chippewa Lake brings you to Remus, where Remus Heritage Days takes place July 17–19, 2026. The festival’s 2026 theme is “Party in the USA – America 250,” with a parade theme of Events in American History and grand marshals drawn from Mecosta County veteransremus.org. The long‑running event features a hospitality tent, vendors, horseshoes, food trucks, quilt show, softball tournaments, truck and tractor pulls, kids’ games and a car showremus.org. It’s a lively community celebration that honors local heritage while providing fun for all ages.
Concerts & culture
Throughout July, Big Rapids hosts a Bandshell Concert Series on Wednesday evenings at the Hemlock Park Bandshell and Pocket Park Concerts on Fridays at lunchtime. Families can also take advantage of free kids’ activities at the public library, antique farm and power club shows, and other summer events listed by the visitors bureau. After a day out, return to The Bluffs for a swim, a barbecue by the firepit, or a game on the indoor pickleball court
